aRTIST STATEMENT
Will Picaro works in colored pencil and graphite, creating highly detailed portraits inside matchbook covers. For over twelve years, he has committed to the matchbook as both medium and metaphor — a small, intimate container for emotionally charged imagery.
Picaro reconstructs carefully selected film frames, historical moments, and personal subjects that resonate deeply with him. Rather than choosing widely recognized or iconic scenes, he seeks out quieter, often overlooked moments — images that reward close attention and emotional memory. His drawings emphasize precision because subtle facial expressions carry psychological weight; accuracy becomes a vehicle for preserving feeling.
The matchbook transforms perception. An object associated with ephemerality and ignition becomes a permanent archive of memory. Through this compressed format, Picaro investigates the relationship between cultural memory and personal attachment.
Each work is singular. He does not repeat images or produce prints. By limiting reproduction, Picaro reinforces the individuality of memory and the intimacy of ownership.
His practice bridges cinematic history and lived experience, exploring how small, precise renderings can hold large emotional narratives.
